Welcome Back Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party!

Another amazing offering is back at Walt Disney World after a two-year hiatus: Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Evie and I went to the September 13th party to experience this fun and not-so-scary event!

First – Let’s start with something that I want all my clients to know if they plan to visit in Aug/September and add the party, there is a high probability of rain at some point in the day. I highly recommend purchasing ponchos from Amazon to have on hand and wearing waterproof shoes on party night. Rain is very typical in Florida, but if you are PREPARED, it’s no big deal!

Ok now onto the fun stuff! You can enter the park as early as 4pm on the day of the Party, without a Magic Kingdom ticket. We entered closer to 7pm, which was a little too late and I wish we had arrived earlier to sneak in a few more rides. Plan to eat dinner before the party.

When you arrive at the party, you’re greeted by Cast Members wearing the cutest outfit and given a Party Wristband. You need this wristband to enjoy the party, so don’t rush through! Then, you are ushered into a “backstage” area, where there are fun golden statues of the characters in Halloween gear. This is where we received our “treat bag” and our first handful of candy! So fun! Look around the park for the treat light-up icons to designate trick-or-treat areas. Evie LOVED this part of the party, and we visited several trick-or-treat locations. Monsters Inc Laugh Floor was our favorite stop for candy.

We started the party by riding a few different rides, Buzz Lightyear, The People Mover, Dumbo and The Barnstormer. Evie was driving the ship, so we did whatever she wanted to do. At one point we got in line for Minnie, Donald and Daisy, but the line was VERY slow. We waited about 40 minutes barely moving, and Evie had had enough – so we got out of line and rode Dumbo again.

I want to say, if meeting characters is your main focus, you will definitely encounter long lines. We wanted to meet Elvis Stitch, but the line was about a 2 hour wait. This was not something we really NEEDED to do, so we decided to trick or treat a bit more and then head over to our dessert party!

We booked the Garden Viewing section of the Mickey Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Dessert Party and I highly recommend grabbing this if available. Yes it is more $$ out the window, but we had designated seats during the firework show. There were select desserts, cheese, fruit, soft drinks and beer and wine available. We enjoyed the break to eat a couple nibbles and then we went to grab our spot for the fireworks show.

The fireworks were INCREDIBLE. We have never seen this show before, a Disney first, and we both really enjoyed it. The projections, storyline and music were out of this world. This show alone made the whole party worth it!

After the fireworks, we went and took a few Magic Shots around the park. We LOVE Magic Shots and I highly recommend you grab at least ONE during the party. Lines are longest near the castle, but honestly it’s worth the wait. They are so fun and a great was to remember the time at the party!

Then it was parade time! We chose to watch the second parade of the night, and I am glad we did! We found a great spot on Main Street USA, right across from Starbucks. I do wish we had gone slightly further down Main Street USA towards the train station, as we just missed Powerline Max (during the first parade he was right where we sat). But we did get to see part of his dance routine and it was MAGIC! Hello 80’s kids, this is our Disney moment right here! Watching Max dance to i2i brought tears to my eyes! Totally amazing.

The headless horseman did his thing before Max came out – just as an FYI. Evie was FREAKED out by the Headless Horseman, and it really was pretty cool to see in person. It is totally a Disney Magic experience.

The parade itself is phenomenal, a must-do experience. Seriously, do not miss this parade! I repeat, DO NOT MISS this parade! It is pure Disney magic, with character interaction, amazing dancing and a catchy tune you’ll be singing the rest of the night! I was so happy to see Vanellope back and driving her candy car with Ralph in front of her – I mean come on, AMAZING!

After the parade we, and everyone else, did some shopping on Main Street USA. Learn from our mistake and do your shopping earlier in the night! It was SO crowded in the Emporium we could barely walk. We bought our few items and then it was See Ya Real Soon time and we left the party to receive a fun commemorative poster from the event. Yes I’ll be framing it to put in my office, it’s cute!

A few tips for you during your party trip:

  • Plan for weather, pack ponchos and water friendly shoes – if there is bad weather, know Disney will do everything they can to have the entertainment happen!!

  • Make a plan of MUST DO experiences, ours were the fireworks show and the parade, you will NOT be able to do it all

  • On that note, be sure we have discussed having another day at the Magic Kingdom that is a non-party night. I think your best bet is to do the rides on another day, and take in all the unique entertainment at the party

  • Dress up! Get into the fun and have a plan for costumes. Evie went as Cinderella (pre-stepsister intervention) and I was supposed to be The Fairy Godmother, but I horribly left my cape at home. I was so bummed we didn’t have our complete costume and I don’t want you to feel like you’ve missed out on any fun!

  • Get your Magic Shots!! Don’t miss out on these unique pictures – they are something you can’t get any other time! We loved the flaming pumpkin!!

  • HAVE FUN!!! Come on, you’re at Disney, this SHOULD be fun!

A quick note: All Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Parties are SOLD OUT for 2022. So if you want to experience this, your best plan is September or October 2023, and the good news here is that hotel reservations are available for 2023 so you can start planning now. You get the best selection of Disney Resort Hotels by booking early.

A Disney First at The Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue

Have you been in a moment and thought, “Wait, how did I get here?” Well I had that moment during my latest dinner at the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue at Walt Disney World. Before I get into that moment, a little backstory is in order.

My family first walked into Pioneer Hall in November of 2018 for my sons first birthday. We asked a friend what we should do for him and they recommended this show as something special and new for our family to experience, we genuinely had no idea what to expect.

Well, we all fell in love with the show, my oldest daughter, Delaney, has dreams of being Dolly Drew when she “grows up” and we all decided that was way too much fun and couldn’t believe in all our years at Disney we hadn’t made time for the show.

Fast forward to March 2020 and we had the ultimate Disney Spring Break planned, complete with our return trip to Hoop, and I think we all know how that played out… the cancelled vacation was a total bummer, but it really gave us something to look forward too. The kids and I spent some time finding the Hoop Dee Doo cast members on Instagram to follow them and see how they were doing – It really blew our minds that many of these cast members have “other roles” around the parks. We used some covid lockdown time laughing at how often we saw them in other pictures from different experiences - y’all I am telling you these actors are TALENTED! They play so many roles and I truly had NO IDEA, hats off to them!

Well, fast forward again to June 2022 and the best news ever is released – Hoop Dee Doo was coming back! This was very exciting and just in time for our upcoming summer vacation to Walt Disney World! We re-visited Pioneer Hall in July and the show was just as fabulous as ever – and it was fun seeing some of the cast members we “knew” through social media back on the stage.

Just this past week, I was back in Disney World for the Middle of the Magic Annual Conference with my middle daughter, Evie! It was just Evie’s 9th birthday and so she was able to tag along with me for some birthday magic! The agency was going to Hoop and I was on the fence if Evie would want to go back, given we were just there in July (the funny part of this story is I was team Hollywood Studios and Evie was team Hoop Dee Doo) – but since it was her birthday, Evie won and we joined the amazing agents at Middle of the Magic for a truly unforgettable evening back at Pioneer Hall!

I don’t want to ruin the show for you if you’ve never been, but there is a LOT of audience participation throughout the show – the cast truly are some of the most magical people in the parks. They are pleasant, funny, engaging and bring you into the show like nothing else. Evie had a cute birthday shout out which was extra special, and at that point I thought the night had been made as it was a new experience we hadn’t had.

So here we are at the part of this long story, where I am going to be in that “How did I get here” train of thought… I was in for a shock when Johnny Ringo walked right up to me and asked if I wanted to help out in the end of the show spectacle. If you know me personally, you’ll know I’m a behind-the-scenes kind of gal. But after some encouragement from my friends, and Evie, I decided, what the heck! I will do it! As a veteran of the event production industry, producing is much more my speed and I love watching others do their thing and shine on stage - I am MUCH more comfortable CALLING a show than I ever will be being IN THE SHOW.

Not giving too much away of the show – this experience was once-in-a-lifetime and something I don’t think I will ever forget. The cast was incredible backstage – I think that part was my favorite (shocking to all, I’m sure). Seeing how they interact with each other, and the other audience participants, was truly magical. Just for example, there is one audience participant that was a younger boy, probably 5 or 6, and there is a loud noise that happens on stage. The actor playing Johnny Ringo was so sweet with him, walking him through what was happening and making sure he wasn’t scared during that moment. He was great with all of us backstage, trying to ease our nerves and make everyone feel comfortable – a true professional.

While I don’t think I will ever join their nightly routine on the stage, I’ll leave that to the professionals - although if they’re looking for a producer, I guess I’d consider it! ha! I am so grateful to have been able to experience this! I hope one day, I’m watching my Dee shine on stage and she can tell her friends, my mom once totally embarrassed herself up here.. isn’t that crazy!?

The moral of this story is this:

1. Don’t be afraid to try something new.

2. Book Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue during your next Walt Disney World vacation.

It’s just a short boat ride from the Magic Kingdom – a great break in your park day! You never know, you might be the next honorary Pioneer Hall Player!

Adventures by Disney is a guided group tour throughout some of these amazing destinations, with extraordinary attention to detail, cultural immersion programs and so much more - if you’re looking to explore the world with that incredible Disney touch, look no further than Adventures by Disney.

Here is a glimpse of a few Adventures by Disney offerings that are inspired by some of my favorite Disney Princesses.

Scotland - Inspired by Merida

A trip to Scotland with Adventures by Disney is truly as magical as the kingdom of DunBoch, with visits to the Edinburgh Castle, Loch Ness and Bogbain Farm. You can even channel your “inner Merida” and try out your archery skills on this adventure.

France - Inspired by Belle and Aurora

Whether it be a River Cruise, Private Adventure or Land Adventure, there are many ways to experience France with Adventures by Disney! Discover the beauty of France, the home of Belle from Disney Animation’s “Beauty and the Beast,” during a private tour of The Louvre, walking and biking through the Garden of Versailles and dinner at the Eiffel Tower. And let’s not forget the little towns and quiet villages guests will discover, including the town of Riquewihr which actually inspired the town in “Beauty in the Beast!” This is a stop on the Rhine River Cruise itinerary.

In addition to River Cruises, Private and Land Adventures, Adventures by Disney even takes guests to France by way of Disneyland Paris! On a Disneyland Paris Vacation, guests will see the magnificent Sleeping Beauty Castle, home of Aurora, from Disney Animation’s “Sleeping Beauty” … and a dragon! The Disneyland Paris Vacation also includes Disney Resort accommodations and premier access to attractions in the Park.

Germany - Inspired by Rapunzel

Experience authentic German culture with an Adventures by Disney trip to a country where Rapunzel’s story originated! Let down your hair during this Germany Land Adventure and enjoy a Neuschwanstein castle tour, medieval costume dress-up and a chocolate-making experience.

China - Inspired by Mulan

We end our royal tour in China, home of Princess Mulan. Our China Land Adventure offers guests the opportunity to discover the beauty, history and wildlife of China. Guests will experience Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing and a few more extraordinary cities with some exciting stops along the way.

Magical Extras Returning to EPCOT

Another anniversary is quickly approaching at Walt Disney World - EPCOT’s 40th Anniversary Celebration! As part of this, some fan-favorite tours are returning beginning October 2, 2022.

These personalized experiences offer an exciting look at the magic of possibilities and provide guests with the unique ability to experience EPCOT by land and by sea!

Experience The Land - Behind the Seeds Tour

This is one of my absolute favorite experiences at Walt Disney World, and I highly recommend if you are an avid-gardener or you’re just looking to improve your green thumb! This one-hour guided walking tour will take you through the innovative greenhouses at EPCOT, where you can get up-close to plants, fish and more!

My favorite part of this tour was learning about the hydroponic growing techniques that are used throughout The Land. You get a glimpse of these greenhouses onboard: Living with the Land, but this tour takes the experience to the next level.

This experience is great for the whole family!

Experience The Seas

DiveQuest

This is an adventure I have not participated in just yet, but would absolutely love to! If you are SCUBA-certified this is the tour for you! EPCOT Seas Adventures – DiveQuest you will dive right into a 5.7-million-gallon saltwater environment and immerse themselves into the sea life surrounding the coral reef. This experience offers SCUBA-certified guests guaranteed calm seas, unlimited visibility, no current and incredible marine life (over 2,000 sea creatures representing over 90 aquatic species including sea turtles, angelfish, dolphins, eagle rays and sharks.) Pretty incredible!

A few things to note before booking this experience. Guests must be 10 years old or older. Any guest between 10 - 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Proof of SCUBA-certification is required. This tour is 2 hours long, with about 40 minutes on the dive.

Dolphins in Depth

Love marine life but not SCUBA-certified? EPCOT has you covered! Dolphins in Depth is an incredible experience where you can meet the bottlenose dolphins at The Seas to learn about their complex undersea behavior and talk with the experts who work with them every day. This tour is approximately 2 hours long with a 30 minute Dolphin encounter - and yes - you WILL get wet so a bathing suit is required.

A few things to note prior to booking this experience - guests must be 44” tall for this experience. A bathing suit is required, but you do NOT need to be SCUBA-certified! This is a wading experience, you will not be fully immersed in the water. And Disney does require full understanding of English to participate, for safety of the guests and animals.

These tours are available to add to your vacations at the 60-day mark and I highly encourage guests to consider adding this unique experiences to their Disney Vacation, if traveling after October 2! Be sure to contact Melissa to learn more!

Dine Among the Stars at Space220 at EPCOT

Dining in outer space has always been a bucket list activity for our 8 year old daughter, and we achieved our mission on our last trip to EPCOT. Well, likely as close to space as any of the members of our family will ever achieve!

To say this experience is anything short of spectacular would be a lie - this was truly the most unique dining experience I have ever had at the Walt Disney World resort. The experience was so real, our youngest was in a bit of a panic when he thought we were actually in space.

You start dinner by receiving your space elevator boarding pass. The kids thought this was super cool, but what happened next was even more amazing. We boarded the elevator and off we went - watching the world beneath us get smaller and smaller until we felt like we had actually entered space. The elevator ride is about a minute long.

When you exit the elevator, the views are truly incredible. We had a dinner reservation at 7:30 which was an ideal time as we were able to watch the sunset across the earth. This took about 10 minutes and it was just so cool. The kids also really enjoyed the dog-astranaut that would occasionally pass by our window.

Now onto the food - we were all very pleased with the food at the restaurant. My husband had the Blue Moon Cauliflower for his appetizer and the Florida Red Snapper for dinner. He enjoyed both entrees and thought the Snapper was cooked perfectly. Jer tried The Nebula to drink, and enjoyed it. For dessert he had the Chocolate Cheesecake - and I’ll admit I was stealing some bites here because this was delicious!

I had the Big Bang Burrata for my appetizer and 8oz Filet for dinner (I was hungry!!) and both were really tasty. The burrata was a really unique combination, and a LOT of burrata, we had to share! I had a glass of wine with my meal which was the perfect pairing. Many tables were trying the Planetary Punch which seemed to be a very cool experience - we decided to save that for next time! For dessert I had the Coconut Panna Cotta - I enjoyed it, and so did our kids!

The kids all had a different entree - Smash Burger, Chicken Tenders and Spaghetti and they all ate their entire meal. For dessert they had space cupcakes, and these were. hit! They also received space cards at the end of the meal which they enjoyed.

The meal itself was on the pricey side - as it is pre-fixe and any alcoholic drinks are extra. If you’d like to see the restaurant but not eat, you can secure reservations to the lounge and you get the entire experience without the food. For our next trip, we want to try to get the Lounge reservation to try out that Planetary Punch! But I will say the food was really enjoyable and I would definitely dine here again for a special occasion.

I think this is a MUST DO experience if you have kids that are interested in space (like my daughter), want the most unique dining experience in the parks or have a special occasion to celebrate. Reservations here are VERY hard to secure, so working with Middle of the Magic Travel certainly helps your chances of getting into this amazing restaurant - and I’d love to help you experience this incredible restaurant!

Genie+ Updates and More...

I recently returned from a week-long vacation in Walt Disney World and had a lot of great opportunities to use the Lightning Lane system.

The BIGGEST change - Disney has recently updated their system so you purchase Genie+ the morning of your visit. Disney has noted this has the possibility to sell out - this has NOT happened to date. That said, I can see this selling out if you are traveling during the busy season, such as the week of Thanksgiving or Christmas Break. This is why it’s important to add Genie+ as early as possible on the day of your park visit. This can be added at midnight eastern time.

You can book your first Genie+ Lightning Lane at 7am the morning of your park visit. If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort, you are able to purchase your Individual Lightning Lanes at this time as well. For guests staying offsite, you can purchase Individual Lightning Lanes at park open (time varies depending on the park).

There have been more experiences added to Genie+ since it opened, these are mostly including character experiences. The Mickey & Minnie meet and greet at Town Square Theater at Magic Kingdom has become one of the most popular Genie+ Lightning Lanes - so if this is something you’d like to do with low wait times, I highly recommend making it your FIRST selection. Why first? If you are lucky to grab the 9am - 10am spot - you’ll walk right into the park and scan in for your first Lightning Lane, after you visit with Mickey & Minnie you can select your second Lightning Lane, all before 10am! It’s a GREAT use of time.

On our last day of our trip, we used this strategy and it worked great! For this day, our Genie+ Lightning Lane Plan was:

  • Meet Mickey & Minnie at Town Square Theater

  • Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin

  • STANDBY for Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover

  • Mad Tea Cups

  • The Barnstormer

  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (PAID INDIVIDUAL LIGHTNING LANE)

  • LUNCH

We did ALL of that before our 12:30 lunch at Cosmic Rays! Right after lunch my husband and oldest daughter used a Lighting Lane to ride Space Mountain, while the younger kiddos and I used a Lighting Lane for Tomorrowland Speedway. After this, we walked back to our resort for a swim break!

You’ll note, we didn’t head to Adventureland/Frontierland with this trip and that was intentional. We split Magic Kingdom into two days and focused on different areas to best maximize our Lightning Lanes and this strategy worked really well. If you have TWO days at Magic Kingdom, this is a great plan!

Here are my top takeaways from each park:

  • Magic Kingdom offers a lot for Genie+ - while attractions do sell out, they do so later in the day than the other parks.

    • The most popular Genie+ attractions at Magic Kingdom tend to be:

      • Jungle Cruise

      • Peter Pan

      • Meet Mickey & Minnie at Town Square Theater

  • Hollywood Studios continues to be the toughest to navigate with Genie+ as many attractions sell out. I hope they add the meet and greets at Star Wars: Launch Bay to Genie+ as I think this would help spread out the popularity of some of the rides.

    • The most popular Genie+ attractions at Hollywood Studios tend to be:

      • Slinky Dog Dash

      • Hollywood Tower of Terror

      • Millenium Falcon: Smugglers Run

      • Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster

  • EPCOT is still undergoing a lot of construction at the moment, but the big draw here is Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, which is not available on Genie+ but rather as an individual Lightning Lane or Virtual Queue. We used Genie+ at EPCOT and we were able to experience every attraction except for Spaceship Earth (this was because it was closed when we had it scheduled to visit). My plan is ALWAYS to book Test Track FIRST then Frozen or Remy’s RIGHT after we ride Test Track. This plan worked really well, so I encourage you to give it a try as well!

    • The most popular Genie+ attractions at EPCOT tend to be:

      • Test Track

      • Frozen Ever After

      • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure

  • Animal Kingdom is the one park where I think you could skip Genie+ and do standby lines and still have a great day. IF you really do NOT want to wait in lines, you’ll really enjoy Genie+ at Animal Kingdom. There is one attraction that does sell out of Lightning Lanes consistently but it is the INDIVIDUAL Lightning Lane and NOT part of Genie+: Avatar Flight of Passage. So you can always book Avatar: Flight of Passage and then experience the rest of the park via standby queue and save a good amount of time this way.

    • The most popular Genie+ attractions at Animal Kingdom tend to be:

      • Na’vi River Journey

      • Meet Favorite Disney Pals at Adventurers Outpost

      • Kilimanjaro Safaris

      • Kali River Rapids (during warm weather, cooler weather this is not as popular since it’s a water ride!)

My biggest takeaway is that Genie+ is worth the cost ($15 plus tax per person, per day) if you do not want to wait in lines. We really enjoyed the Genie+ experience over the summer - our crowds were a little lower than when we first used Genie+ back in November and I think that helped with our overall experience. We also improved our strategy on Genie+ and split up a few times when our kids wanted to do different things. This helped maximize our Genie+ day!

You won’t be able to ride EVERY ride on Genie+ but you can save a lot of time by using this system. We tended to get more than 3 rides per day - which ultimately is better than the previous Fast Pass system, even if we had to pay this was worth it to me to save time. Any questions - please let me know below!

To get all of my tips and tricks on Genie+, book your next Disney Vacation through Middle of the Magic and receive access to my complete guide! Plus I’m available throughout your ENTIRE trip to help you strategize and plan to make the most of the magic! Start planning today!
